App-etizing Choices

Phipps’ Let’s Move Pittsburgh program, which aims to fight childhood obesity through nutrition and physical education, developed the Green Light Foods app to empower shoppers to make healthy choices at the grocery store.

A simple scan of a barcode in the app reveals nutritional information, with a “traffic light” color grid to indicate low, moderate, and high concentrations of ingredients that contribute to obesity. “We are thrilled to offer Green Light Foods as a solution for parents and other caregivers with limited time to spend scrutinizing labels in the grocery store,” says Phipps Executive Director Richard V. Piacentini.

“It is our hope that the new tool will not only make it easier for families to embrace healthy living, but also help to instill in children better eating habits that will serve them well for a lifetime.” The app, which was developed collaboratively by Let’s Move Pittsburgh and students at Carnegie Mellon University, is available to download through iTunes and Google Play stores.
